In October 2006 Thetford was awarded Growth Point Status by the Government reflecting that from now until 2021, and even beyond, Thetford and the surrounding area will become one of the fastest growing areas in the East of England. From now until 2021 around 5,000 new houses and many of the predicted 6,000 jobs for Breckland will be delivered in Thetford.
The bid was spearheaded by Breckland Council and Thetford Town Council over the last year and builds on the momentum of The Moving Thetford Forward Campaign to make Thetford a sustainable community of regional significance. As a result of the bid the Government has awarded £150,000, with this funding helping to initiate investigation into options for the growth and regeneration and the infrastructure schemes needed to support the housing and employment growth and the wider regeneration of the town over the next 15 years. This work will be used to inform future funding bids to various bodies including the Government. It will also inform the Thetford Area Action Plan which will form part of Breckland’s Local Development Framework and will provide the detailed planning policy framework to guide the growth and regeneration of the town.
